About

Abigail Escatel is a PhD candidate & American Association of University Women’s Dissertation Fellow in the Department of Communication Studies. Since her work is interdisciplinary, she also contributes to Latina/o/x/e Studies and Gender, Women & Sexuality Studies. Her current work is titled, “Orphaned Upon Entry: A Rhetorical History of Detaining the Migrant Child, 1980-2018.” She  identifies herself as a scholar-activist, meaning that her scholarship centers upon rhetorical histories of oppression and marginalization AND she meaningfully engages in local community-based advocacy work.  Escatel is a powerful writer, a bold intellectual, and a tenacious advocate of truth and justice. She now supports the work of the Great Plains Action Society (in Iowa City) and the Justice & Liberation Coalition (in Cedar Rapids) who provide support to at-risk migrants.
